On Friday the 23rd of November I attended an Open Day with the BLD Foundation at the BP headquarters in Canary Wharf. This day included many exciting activities and opportunities. We were treated to a tour of the offices on which they organise shipping and drilling within BP, and were given an insight on how law and lawyers contributed and how they were such a necessity in this corrupt environment. Then, we engaged in a hot-seating task in which many different lawyers who work with BP came in a talked to us about their education, degrees (how these transferred into their area of law), their job roles and some specialised advice on this industry. For me, this was definitely one of the highlights on the day as those of us who were definitely interest in a career in law were able to capture aspect of the field you just can’t grasp from a website or a brochure!
Next we played a few games! These involved guessing a brand just by looking at the logos, with all the text of lettering removed. Of course my team won, we are very competitive group of girls! We then learnt how branding is also heavily influenced by law, in terms of copyrights and infringements. You’ll be surprised of the lengths some people will go to, to mimic a well-known and established company or brand.
Another highlight of the Open Day was our Mock Mediation session. In this activity we were put into groups along with a professional Mediator and were giving confidential briefs. In my case I had to take on the role of the General Counsel for a talent management agency, First Rate. In this activity, an injured athlete ‘Jo Gold’ was suing her agency for failing to insure her properly resulting in her early departure from a successful business. I enjoyed this task so much as it demanded so many negotiating skills and tactical management t ensure my ‘client’ got the result they wanted.
I would recommend any of these TCTL open days or any that BLD Foundation provides an they give such an in-depth insight into the legal field, as well as intimate chances to talk to lawyers and make great connections.
