First headstart

The First Headstart programme is targeted at students from ethnic minority backgrounds in their first year (law degree) and second year (non-law) at university based in the UK. The aim of the First Headstart programme is to:

  • Educate and inform about what the legal profession has to offer and the available wide-ranging opportunities.
  • Provide insight into what students should be doing to prepare themselves for a career in law, including:

o   Practical introduction to commercial awareness

o   An insight to different routes to the legal profession

o   Participation in career development exercises

            o   Work shadowing

o   Making the most of networking – professionally approaching lawyers

  • Provide hints and tips on vacation scheme applications and interviews
  • Provide advice from recent graduates and trainees

The programme consists of a 1 day interactive workshop (taking place in London on the 2nd July 2014), with sessions delivered by experienced lawyers and graduate recruitment personnel currently working within the legal industry. It will be like attending an open day with several firms at once. There is also the potential opportunity to visit selected law firms for work shadowing.
